David Wood has nearly twenty years experience as a senior manager in higher education. Before starting an independent
consultancy, he was Academic Director for Continuing Professional Development at Oxford Brookes University. At Brookes
he oversaw the work of the Westminster Institute of Education’s Consultancy and Development unit (turnover 2m p.a.),
which had a number of national contracts with, for example, the DfES, Astra Zeneca, the Training and Development Agency
for Schools, and the Arts Council. Previously he was Assistant Principal at the Central School of Speech and Drama, and
a 14-19 adviser in 2 local authorities.
Research, evaluation and consultancy
David Wood has conducted evaluations for and been a consultant to several Universities, Arts Council England, OfSTED,
the Nuffield Foundation, ESCalate, the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Deanery for Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education and
the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority, whose 2006 report rated him as ‘highly recommended.’ He wrote the national
report on professional development in the national
Creative Partnerships
initiative in 2005.
At present, he is leading the Oxford Brookes University team conducting the three-year audit of Creative Partnerships
for the Arts Council.
He also conducted a three-year evaluation of the largest DfES - funded Independent State School Partnership,
Learning Through Creativity.
For the Kent Surrey and Sussex Deanery he was part of the evaluation of the Foundation pilot scheme for new doctors, and
in 2007 conducted another evaluation mapping the ‘learner pathway’ of foundation programme doctors. In 2007/8 he was
commissioned to co-ordinate the drafting of quality assurance regulations for postgraduate medical education in the
Kent Surrey and Sussex region.
He was a member of the Nuffield Foundation review of the aims of the 14-19 curriculum. He has expertise in
professional development policy and a particular interest in arts and creativity in education. His most recent book for
education professionals was published in 2006, The New Professional’s Handbook: A guide for the early career teacher,
Oxford:Philip Allan.
David Wood has also been a director of a retail pharmacy chain in Essex for 25 years.
